Why should you shop ethically ?

                                                        #shop #ethically #money

Now you know what ethical consumerism is, you should ask yourself why you should shop ethically. By carefully choosing what we buy and looking at where the brands come from, we as consumers can decide to choose only those products that have a positive impact on people, the planet and animals.  In addition, being part of a movement of people who make similar positive choices helps to create a great impact on the world around us.

There are four main reason for humans to shop ethically :

  • Because it’s good for the environment
  • Because it’s good for society
  • Because it’s good for animals’ welfare
  • Because it’s good for your body and soul

GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT :

Nowadays, humans are facing with many environment issues, from global warming to pesticide pollution and changing of the climate. All those issues are in part be bind to the way we shop our goods. In today’s world of fast fashion, shops not only offer seasonal collection, but offer also new line on a weekly basis, people often buy more clothes that they really need, and it has a huge impact on the environment (BBC, Radhika Sanghani, 2018).
However, the production process of those clothes is usually including pesticides used in cotton farming and toxic dyes in manufacturing. That production process impact is wrecking little by little the planet (Keith Tyrell, Director PAN UK, 2017).

In this case, where shopping good deteriorates the environment, shop ethically would mean to buy only the goods you need (not more food that you need, not more clothes that you need…), and when you are buying them, to  verify the impact of the production of those goods on the environment.

GOOD FOR SOCIETY :

Today, consumers  have a dual role as citizens comprising society and as economic actors who buy products. Consumer may experience various conflict between social values and personal values. Moreover, these consumers’ conflict can be affected by the regulation of retail markets by the government (Research paper of Adele Copola, Fabio Verneau, Fransesco Carraciolo and Theresa Panico, 2017).
Indeed, many products we purchased have been produced by companies that pay their workers by poverty wages, that’s good for the customer because they don’t have expensive products, but the social value is poor because of the poverty wages of the workers. If society “continue to pay less and less, destroying the purchasing power of the consumers who would make less money” (Laureen Dixon, 2017).

In this way, buying ethical means to purchase products only from companies that respect   their values and commitments to our communities but also by buying products that mentioned that there are “Fairtrade accreditation” or “Fair Tax Mark”.

GOOD FOR ANIMAL WELFARE :

The consummation of animals represents an important problem nowadays. Each year, human consume more than 53 billion of animals (for human food and for apparel) (Maria Russel, 2015). Those animals are not always treated humanely (Georges Monbiot, The Guardian, 2015). Moreover, a lot of animal are testing for cosmetics and treated in the wrong way. Some factories farming are also treated their animals by not respecting them (Gerhard Heldmaier, Chairperson of the Senate Commission on Animal Protection and Experimentation of the DFG, 2016).

In this way, purchase and consume ethically can help to improve, in a number of ways, a lot of conditions for animals. For example, concerning products which have been tested on animals before, the best thing to do is to purchase products only in the brand that refuse to do their test on animals.

GOOD FOR BODY AND SOUL :

Buying ethically is good for your health and well-being. Indeed, everyone knows that a healthy and balanced diet is good for your health, which very often means leaving behind products rich in sugar and salt, which are very often marketed irresponsibly to children. It is therefore important to defend sustainable brands and reduce consumption.

There is something very satisfying about ethical shopping. It is often difficult to define, but those who make ethical purchases feel empowered knowing that the small changes they make are a vote that can have significant environmental and social impacts.

To conclude, we can say that ethical consumption can be the best way to consume while respecting the world around us, and that is why people should shop ethically.
